As we put the celebrations of Harvest behind us and with the days a little cooler, we begin to look forward at this time of year here at Foxholes Farm. With the lighting of wood burners and the smell of bonfires in the air, the atmosphere is cosy as we brace ourselves ready for autumn.

The cows start to settle in to their dry sheltered beds, having been worn out from all the fresh air and summer grazing on tender grass. The Farm Park animals nestle down in their quarters although some animals are kept outside all year round. Whilst the sheep embrace the cooler days with their fluffy woollen coats keeping them warm, the mischievous goats enjoy playing together in their pens.

In the farm shop this month we are certainly spoiled with the harvest of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Beetroot, sweetcorn, cabbages, pumpkins, squashes, leeks, carrots cauliflower, chillis, apples and pears all make wonderful dishes. It’s a great start to the autumn and also the beginning of the wild game season, and what better way to celebrate than with a warm delicious curry. Eating game is cheap, healthy and perfect for feeding the whole family. Our butchery counter will be full of fine meats like rabbit, pheasant, duck and venison, rich in flavour and perfect for the pot. With national ‘curry week’ and heading towards the comfort food season, we also stock some of the finest cheaper cuts of meat, perfect for slow cooking. Using cheaper cuts of meat is so much more economical and especially useful for making scrumptious dinner delights, stews or casseroles and we could all do with a little comfort food in these strange times.

School half term is upon us so quickly. Grab your broomsticks and enjoy our ghoulishly Halloween spooky farm trail. Solve creepy clues, choose your own pumpkin from our pumpkin patch & have fun dressing up in your scariest outfits to win an overall prize with pics from our spooky selfie point.

Our ‘deli on the moove’ takeaway will have plenty of warming dishes on the menu, hot soups, burgers, hotdogs, sausage rolls, pastries and drinks to go, or why not sit and enjoy in our garden. Artisan cheese of the month is “Whittington Red”, a silky smooth cheese which is a cross between a double Gloucester and Red Leicester, with a mature lasting tang, perfect for the cheeseboard, grilled or to add great colour and taste to autumn salads.

The farm is in full swing preparing for the busy festive months ahead. We will soon be taking Christmas meat orders and our new line of luxury hampers will be launched to get your taste buds buzzing and finish the perfect feast for all the family.
