After all the rain in December, the fields are certainly greener than usual for this time of year. This is also the time of year we prepare all our fields for grazing and planting.
As most of us try to add healthier options to our diet at the beginning of the new year, here at Foxholes Farm we strive for quality. Our farm shop and butchery provides alternatives to the usual diet, for the gluten-free we have a fine selection of products available, with gluten-free sausages handmade by our butchers, biscuits, ready meals, baking ingredients and cakes by local producers. For vegetarians and vegans we have a great range of pulses and fresh vegetables, seasonal varieties of kale, parsnips, swede, carrots (good for warming vegetable casseroles) or Seville oranges (available towards end of the month) to make splendid thick cut marmalades and cakes. The deli counter is full of fabulous fine cheeses, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, and cooked meats. We are currently working on a recipe for home-cooked vegetarian sausage rolls, which will be packed out with flavoursome vegetables, delicious hot or cold.
For the meat eater our butchery is well stocked with wild duck, venison and pheasants, but if you’re after a leaner cut of meat at this time of year go for tenderloin of pork, loin chops, lamb rump, lamb steaks and diced lamb. Fillet of beef, silverside and skirt are good for sprucing up your stir-fry dishes and skinless chicken breasts diced, grilled or on skewers make delicious dishes. These leaner cuts of meat will be higher in protein, lower in sodium and as such are able to contribute more vitamins and minerals to our health and well-being. With ‘Burns Night’ just around the corner haggis is the vital ingredient to any burns night dish! Our butchers are happy to cut any meat to any size for your requirements just ask at the counter or pre-order.
The Farmer’s Table has gluten-free options for most dishes and cake, along with our special gluten-free high tea for two, which is certainly very popular. The Farmer’s table is open until 4pm every day, serving lighter dishes such as sandwiches, wraps and warming soups. For the bigger appetite try our handmade pies, filled with our homegrown meat, or homemade burgers served with chips. If you love a cooked breakfast try our Farmer’s Full English Breakfast, with our own dry-cured bacon and handmade sausages and tea or coffee. Hot and cold drinks are served all day.
Although our bags are recyclable and bio degradable, please remember when shopping at our farm shop to bring your own bags or containers and we will happily fill them up for you!
