This time of year there are always things that need to be done, although our farm park is closed to the public until Easter, our team are working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready. Feeding is the main priority, building new houses, maintenance of fences, all this upkeep takes time and really continues all year round. With lambing season just around the corner and so much prep work to do, we can’t wait for the season to change into spring.
The school holidays are nearly here so this half term it’s time to put on your wellies and explore our farm. Our ‘Meet the Farmer’ workshops are Wednesday 19th February from 10am until 12pm, price £15.95 for ages 5 to 15 years. A tour around our farm by our award-winning farmer, meeting the animals and finding out about the different breeds of cows, sheep and goats we have, you also get to meet our new pigmy goat kids! You will end your morning with a delicious farm bangers and mash lunch and take home a free goody bag.
As we continue through the season, ’purple sprouting broccoli’ makes an appearance (although not in season for long), with its tender shoots, it reminds us that spring is not too far away. Cooked gently with some garlic and seasoning, it’s the perfect match for any roast. Whether it’s swede, celeriac, kale, leeks, parsnips or turnips, our farm shop loves to show off our range of root vegetables available at this time of year, also in season are blood oranges (good for jam) and citrus fruit, perfect to pair with your Gin & Tonic. As the game season comes to an end, venison is still available and proves very popular at this time of year. Whether you roast, grill or slow-cook, this flavoursome meat, rich in colour and low in calories is a delightful meat, low in fat and very nutritious.
Our home reared, grass fed lamb boxes are a great way of stocking up the freezer. Lamb steak for grilling, neck for stewing, chops, leg and shoulder for roasting, it’s a great way to feed your family throughout the winter months, whole and half boxes available. Celebrate by cooking some pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (25th Feb), our farm shop has everything you need to make the perfect pancake. Flour, fresh lemons, honey, fresh milk and syrup toppings are just some of the ingredients available. If you’re celebrating ‘Valentine’s day’ (14th Feb) we have a fine selection of steaks in our butchery, great with delicious champagne & prosecco or artisan chocolates.
