This month you can certainly say you can enjoy everything that the Great British Summer has to offer. Farming at this time of the year has it`s bonus points too, using this precious time to get farm jobs completed in the early light mornings before the sun starts to break through and the heat turns on.
More calves have been born and what better start in life can you give them than nurturing your own straight out onto the fields. Our spring baby goats are in full swing playing in the paddocks and in the next few weeks we will hopefully see more ‘Baby Kids’, as our goat paddock has recently turned into a maternity ward. Our friendly KuniKune pigs ‘Mashed Potato’ and ‘Thimble’ are doing very well, eating every piece of food they’re given and doing what pigs do, they will be in their element being fed every day by our lovely visitors when schools out! Our alpacas, donkeys, goats, cows and new baby calves are great to see and the farm park is a great place to relax on those balmy summer days. The farm park will be open every day 11am-3pm from 21st July -2nd September, so we are preparing for six weeks of summer fun here on the farm!
Beetroot, salad leaves, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, raspberries and cherries are in the farm shop this month, with such plentiful produce around the farm and from other local producers, it’s no wonder we love the summer season for food. Being blessed with so many warm sunny days this year and with world cup fever barbecues in full swing, our butchers are working hard preparing the best meats for the grill. Marinated steaks, chicken & chorizo and duck kebabs are just some of the delicious finds from the butchery counter, or if you’re on a camping trip, don’t forget to pack some farmhouse sausages and home-cured bacon, our deli also provides home made quiches, cold meats and a selection of fine cheese, perfect for the happy camper.
Sit back and relax at Granny Smith’s Tea Room with a delightful array of seasonal dishes. Our specials board changes with the seasons and this month we are serving refreshing Caesar salads and our specialty ‘meat platter’, served with our very own grass fed beef. ‘Pimm’s o’clock’ is a good way to relax and un-wind, whether your sharing with friends or simply want a glass to yourself, laced with fresh fruit and mint it’s the perfect summer tipple. Why not book in for an afternoon or high tea and soak up the weather from our terrace. Open seven days a week Foxholes Farm is the place to be this summer.

Our farm has finally come to life as spring has finally sprung here at Foxholes Farm. So far the farm is running a few weeks behind than normal, every day we are reminded of jobs and tasks that relate to the early spring season, repairing damaged fields, making our fences stock proof and of course nurturing all our early spring arrivals. Our orphan lambs are now playing freely in the outdoor paddocks and this year we have plenty of baby goats to keep them company. Everything changes so quickly this time of year including our animals, our piglets are bigger, our chicks are fluffier and our baby goats are even more naughty.
Our farm shop team are waiting for the first delivery of British asparagus, although now in season we are not surprised if they arrive (due to weather conditions) a little late. Spring onions, radishes, rocket, watercress and gooseberries start to gradually arrive and if you love lamb we have the perfect cuts for cooking. The BBQ season is here and if you didn’t dust off your BBQ during last month’s heat wave, there is still time to fire it up. Glazed cuts of meat, burgers, steaks and kebabs are just some of the BBQ meats ready for the grill. Or why not stock up the freezer with one of our amazing BBQ meat boxes.
If you’re looking for some half term fun, our farm park will be open every day throughout the half term school holidays from 11am – 3pm and for the little ones we will be hosting our ‘Meet the Farmer’ workshops on the 30th & 31st of May 2018. Having been focused on the Easter holiday period, lambing, calving and the opening of our Farm Park, life for us here at Foxholes Farm has been fun, but challenging. With new animal enclosures housing our large and small animals and longing for some good weather, our cows and their calves can at least start to finally graze.
This month sees a change in the farm shop, with produce more plentiful and very green, watercress, spinach, spring onions, greens and wild garlic all come into season, along with sweet tender lamb. Our butchers will always cut any meat to any size using their skills and if you would like to bring out the butcher in you, our butchers are hosting a special (last of the season) evening butchery class on Thursday 20th April (although only a few spaces left) you can still book by calling our farm shop. If you’re a lover of beef as we certainly are, we like to champion what we produce here on the farm, especially this time of year by celebrating ‘Great British Beef Week” (23rd-30th April) and for us, producing quality grass fed beef is extremely time consuming, but very rewarding.
Our outdoor seating area is very popular at this time of year, pop in for UK Coffee Week (16th – 22nd) or if you love tea drop in for a cuppa on the 21st April and celebrate National Tea Day, we certainly have a wide selection on offer.
Celebrate all things British on St George’s Day (23rd April); our farm shop is always bursting with British produce. From fresh British vegetables, British fine cheese, local beers, ales and even gin, buying British is best, giving you great quality, freshness and traceability, it is so important to support our British producers (being one myself) and their communities.
Our Farm Park is now open every weekend from 11am – 3pm throughout the summer, meet and feed the animals large or small and explore the great outdoors. We are proud to open up our family working farm with all it has to offer for a Third year and we look forward to seeing you soon here at Foxholes Farm!
Help feed our baby lambs & goats, not all lambs & goats are able to be looked after by their mums, so they need bottle feeding by hand. If you would like to help feed our baby goats & lambs, please book via our farm shop call 01992 552900
Feeding Session Prices £9.95 per child (accompanying adults go free) price also gives you entry into our Farm Park.

1pm – Baby Goat Feeding
2.30pm– Baby Lamb Feeding

March is not only a new month, we also have the anticipation of early spring lambs, Easter fun on the farm and the opening of our glorious Farm Park.
After not such a fabulous February being hit like most businesses by the weather, the madness of March can begin. Preparing fields and slowly allowing our animals out from their winter quarters can be quite challenging, especially when there is still frost on the ground. But once our babies are out in the fields they soon realise how exciting being free range and feeding on the grass can be.
Our Farm Park opens its gates once again to our amazing visitors, it’s a pleasurable feeling seeing everyone appreciate what us farmers are trying to achieve and for them to enjoy the Hertfordshire countryside. We always advise to just wrap up warm, put on your wellington boots and enjoy the first signs of spring. Our Farm Park season runs from April-October and we will be open 11am-3pm over the Easter Hertfordshire school holidays, including, bank holidays and weekends. Lambing is important this time of year and although it can be a joyous occasion, unfortunately some babies do get left behind so we’ve introduced feeding sessions at the farm. Not only is this educational but it’s so lovely to see children (and adults) help to feed the young orphans, giving our animals a great start in life. We will be running our session times over the Easter holidays from 30th March – 15th April, see our website for details. www.foxholesfarm.com.
The farm shop is always keen to stock quality seasonal produce and this month purple sprouting broccoli makes an appearance, along with spring lamb, watercress, chicory and if you’re more adventurous, pak choy. Although we do aim for seasonal fruit & vegetables, this time of year some favourites can be quite difficult to source. Our Farm Shop is full to the brim with Mother’s Day (Sunday 11th March) gifts, from chocolates to artisan pink gins, pretty animal themed scarfs, kitchenware, note books, coasters and much more. With Easter on it’s way we have plenty of fresh turkeys, Easter themed goodies too. Granny Smith’s Tea Room will be serving our popular high teas (advanced booking required) and we will also be serving a super special Sunday menu for those special mums! So we can see why people call this month ‘Mad March’!
