After the frantic half term holidays we now start to focus on Christmas! November is a very special time of year here at Foxholes Farm as we look forward to the coming weeks with a festive feast allowing our visitors to sample the delicious food, drinks and gifts our farm shop has to offer. The farm park has now closed for the season although some of our farm animals will still graze for the winter months whilst some will nestle into their winter corners. Our daughter Charlotte has the hardest job at this time of year, with the darker mornings and evenings drawing in so quickly, Charlotte has to make sure all her herds are kept safe, fed and watered and with our 1000th calf having been born, the farm certainly keeps her busy!
Our butchers are here to help and being open seven days a week we aim to please every customer that walks through our farm shop door. Fine cheese, pies, turkeys, beef, gammon and cold meats can now be ordered in time for Christmas. Take advantage and order early, you can order any size and cut to suit you budget or needs. The Christmas order form can be downloaded from our website or is available from our farm shop.

The farm shop has a great selection of gifts, from artisan gins to chocolates, cheese and condiments, perfect for making your own bespoke hamper. After one of the driest harvests in years we start to look forward to autumn here at Foxholes Farm. As the fields gradually turn from brown to green it’s a food haven for our outdoor animals. Although autumn grass is not as sweet as in spring we are thankful that our animals can still gracefully graze at this time of year.
We had a great start to the month, our resident local DJ Richie Firth from Absolute Radio, popped into the farm with his young family and ended coming face to face with one of our lady goats! #GoatGate was born, the craziness of radio coverage, in more ways than one. Richie described his ordeal (or lack of one) on air all week as his fears of #GoatGate continued on the new show ‘Home time’ so they spoke to us and wanted an opinion. So there we were on drive time radio inviting Ritchie back to face his fears. The story continues! You can listen to all the shenanigans for #GoatGate by downloading the podcast from the Absolute Radio website. https://absoluteradio.co.uk/schedule/hometime-with-bush-richie-380/episodes/112733/?play
If you wish to take advantage of the rest of the season our farm park is still open at weekends from 11am to 3pm. After a few hours walking around our farm park feeding the animals why not pop in to our tea room for a light lunch or a lovely Sunday roast with all the trimmings, or maybe before your lovely walk try our Farmer’s full English! Our Tea Room is open every day from 9am to 4pm, (10am Sundays) serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Christmas is never too far away and we are now taking bookings from 19th November to 21st December 2018 for Christmas parties, a tasty Foxholes Farm set menu lunch for you to enjoy with family, friends or work colleagues.

With all the signs of autumn on the horizon and with an exceptionally dry summer just gone by, it’s quite easy as farmers’ to embrace this time of year. We harvested our silage early to ensure all our cows are fed throughout the winter months, although some much needed rain wouldn’t go a miss.
Our Farm Park continues to thrive and after a heat wave in the summer holidays, we are still continuing to make our farm park more of a destination, adding little extras for our visitors every year! One of these being ‘Event Hire Space’, my family had the pleasure of celebrating our daughters wedding right here at Foxholes Farm. With a stunning marquee and fantastic views overlooking our lakes, it was the perfect backdrop for a personalised wedding or function and with easy access our ‘event space’ is available to hire from April – October 2019.
The food season has begun; we kicked off with ‘Love Lamb Week’, a celebration of British Lamb. Vegetables such as leeks, kale and squashes also start to make an appearance along with a selection of slow cook meats as we slowly enter the ‘British Game Season’.

As we head into even more warm weather we still have a bumper harvest ahead, although most of our arable crops have already been harvested for winter silage our combines are still busy harvesting day and night. It`s important as farmers that we harvest now to help cut costs for our winter feed, although some farmers have had to dip into their winter supply during the dry heat.
Our Farm Park team are kept busy feeding and watering the animals during these hot summer days, the Farm Park is a great way to just come and relax whilst taking in the Hertfordshire Countryside. We love opening every day (11am-3pm) at this time of year, it`s lovely to see our visitors learning new things about the farm and this month we have some new baby pigmy goats, a first for us here at foxholes Farm. With new calves due to arrive in the next few weeks we can share a fabulous piece of our farm life with our visitors, over the years we’ve wanted to create a haven for our visitors and their families to learn about good food and how our farm has grown.
August brings us so many seasonal fruits and vegetables like aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes, beetroot, radishes, raspberries, peaches with apricots making an appearance later in the month, what’s not to like. This time of year it`s lovely to preserve your supply of plentiful produce, our farm shop has a wide range of products ready for the jam making season and don`t forget the all important pickling. Our Foxholes Farm Park trailer is always stocked with delicious cold snacks and drinks, great for all the family or if the children need a bite to eat whilst exploring the farm. We have plenty of delicious Children’s meal boxes at only £4.00 for them to enjoy within the Farm Park area.
BBQ meats have been the main attraction this summer, steaks, chops, ribs, sausages and burgers are all very popular. If you love salad our resident growers have been busy producing some amazing salad, herbs and vegetables from the garden kitchen. With so much seasonal produce on offer this time of year we make sure nothing goes to waste by using any surplus on the Granny Smith’s Tea Room menu.
If you’re fed up with cooking in this heat why not book yourself into the Foxholes Garden Kitchen, a rural outdoor dining experience run by Chef Director Lee Maycock, you will start with a walk through the garden kitchen where Lee will explain a little about the concept. You’ll then sit down to enjoy a fresh, simple, five course dinner using only produce from our farm and our farm shop. Numbers and dates are limited so book now to secure your place at this very unique venue. (See our Garden Kitchen page for details).
So enjoy the rest of the summer because here at Foxholes Farm it’s all about the farming, food, family and fun!
This month you can certainly say you can enjoy everything that the Great British Summer has to offer. Farming at this time of the year has it`s bonus points too, using this precious time to get farm jobs completed in the early light mornings before the sun starts to break through and the heat turns on.
More calves have been born and what better start in life can you give them than nurturing your own straight out onto the fields. Our spring baby goats are in full swing playing in the paddocks and in the next few weeks we will hopefully see more ‘Baby Kids’, as our goat paddock has recently turned into a maternity ward. Our friendly KuniKune pigs ‘Mashed Potato’ and ‘Thimble’ are doing very well, eating every piece of food they’re given and doing what pigs do, they will be in their element being fed every day by our lovely visitors when schools out! Our alpacas, donkeys, goats, cows and new baby calves are great to see and the farm park is a great place to relax on those balmy summer days. The farm park will be open every day 11am-3pm from 21st July -2nd September, so we are preparing for six weeks of summer fun here on the farm!
Beetroot, salad leaves, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, raspberries and cherries are in the farm shop this month, with such plentiful produce around the farm and from other local producers, it’s no wonder we love the summer season for food. Being blessed with so many warm sunny days this year and with world cup fever barbecues in full swing, our butchers are working hard preparing the best meats for the grill. Marinated steaks, chicken & chorizo and duck kebabs are just some of the delicious finds from the butchery counter, or if you’re on a camping trip, don’t forget to pack some farmhouse sausages and home-cured bacon, our deli also provides home made quiches, cold meats and a selection of fine cheese, perfect for the happy camper.
Sit back and relax at Granny Smith’s Tea Room with a delightful array of seasonal dishes. Our specials board changes with the seasons and this month we are serving refreshing Caesar salads and our specialty ‘meat platter’, served with our very own grass fed beef. ‘Pimm’s o’clock’ is a good way to relax and un-wind, whether your sharing with friends or simply want a glass to yourself, laced with fresh fruit and mint it’s the perfect summer tipple. Why not book in for an afternoon or high tea and soak up the weather from our terrace. Open seven days a week Foxholes Farm is the place to be this summer.
On behalf of all the team here at Foxholes Farm, we look forward to seeing you this Summer!
