  • Sept – Blog

With all the signs of autumn on the horizon and with an exceptionally dry summer just gone by, it’s quite easy as farmers’ to embrace this time of year. We harvested our silage early to ensure all our cows are fed throughout the winter months, although some much needed rain wouldn’t go a miss.

Our Farm Park continues to thrive and after a heat wave in the summer holidays, we are still continuing to make our farm park more of a destination, adding little extras for our visitors every year! One of these being ‘Event Hire Space’, my family had the pleasure of celebrating our daughters wedding right here at Foxholes Farm. With a stunning marquee and fantastic views overlooking our lakes, it was the perfect backdrop for a personalised wedding or function and with easy access our ‘event space’ is available to hire from April – October 2019.

The food season has begun; we kicked off with ‘Love Lamb Week’, a celebration of British Lamb. Whether it’s lamb steaks, lamb roast or simply a slow-cook, our butchers will hand cut any size meat to suit your needs. Look out for ‘British Food Fortnight’ from the 22nd September to 7th October, a national celebration of British Food and as a British Farm shop we take pride in bringing great food to our customers attention. Autumnal fruits are new in this month; our farm shop will be full to the brim over the next few weeks with delights such as apples, pears, apricots, plums and figs. Vegetables such as leeks, kale and squashes also start to make an appearance along with a selection of slow cook meats as we slowly enter the ‘British Game Season’.

Our Butchery classes are back! Learn the tricks of the trade on how to work from nose to tail with pork, our butchers will demonstrate and talk you through how to make the most of this versatile animal. Gain knowledge and skills such as boning, splitting, tying and curing. Class dates: September 20th, October 18th and November 15th. Price £90.00 per person, call our Farm shop to book on 01992 552900.

And last but not least, our farm could not continue and thrive without the loyalty and kindness of all our customers. With this in mind we will soon be introducing our Foxholes Farm Food subscription, a collection of monthly seasonal food chosen just for you, a food lovers haven of fine British Food. Check out our website for more details coming soon…

    August – Blog

As we head into even more warm weather we still have a bumper harvest ahead, although most of our arable crops have already been harvested for winter silage our combines are still busy harvesting day and night. It`s important as farmers that we harvest now to help cut costs for our winter feed, although some farmers have had to dip into their winter supply during the dry heat.

Our Farm Park team are kept busy feeding and watering the animals during these hot summer days, the Farm Park is a great way to just come and relax whilst taking in the Hertfordshire Countryside. We love opening every day (11am-3pm) at this time of year, it`s lovely to see our visitors learning new things about the farm and this month we have some new baby pigmy goats, a first for us here at foxholes Farm. With new calves due to arrive in the next few weeks we can share a fabulous piece of our farm life with our visitors, over the years we’ve wanted to create a haven for our visitors and their families to learn about good food and how our farm has grown.

August brings us so many seasonal fruits and vegetables like aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes, beetroot, radishes, raspberries, peaches with apricots making an appearance later in the month, what’s not to like. This time of year it`s lovely to preserve your supply of plentiful produce, our farm shop has a wide range of products ready for the jam making season and don`t forget the all important pickling. Our Foxholes Farm Park trailer is always stocked with delicious cold snacks and drinks, great for all the family or if the children need a bite to eat whilst exploring the farm. We have plenty of delicious Children’s meal boxes at only £4.00 for them to enjoy within the Farm Park area.

BBQ meats have been the main attraction this summer, steaks, chops, ribs, sausages and burgers are all very popular. If you love salad our resident growers have been busy producing some amazing salad, herbs and vegetables from the garden kitchen. With so much seasonal produce on offer this time of year we make sure nothing goes to waste by using any surplus on the Granny Smith’s Tea Room menu.

If you’re fed up with cooking in this heat why not book yourself into the Foxholes Garden Kitchen, a rural outdoor dining experience run by Chef Director Lee Maycock, you will start with a walk through the garden kitchen where Lee will explain a little about the concept. You’ll then sit down to enjoy a fresh, simple, five course dinner using only produce from our farm and our farm shop. Numbers and dates are limited so book now to secure your place at this very unique venue. (See our Garden Kitchen page for details).

So enjoy the rest of the summer because here at Foxholes Farm it’s all about the farming, food, family and fun!

Summer fun at Foxholes Farm! July Blog

This month you can certainly say you can enjoy everything that the Great British Summer has to offer. Farming at this time of the year has it`s bonus points too, using this precious time to get farm jobs completed in the early light mornings before the sun starts to break through and the heat turns on.

More calves have been born and what better start in life can you give them than nurturing your own straight out onto the fields. Our spring baby goats are in full swing playing in the paddocks and in the next few weeks we will hopefully see more ‘Baby Kids’, as our goat paddock has recently turned into a maternity ward. Our friendly KuniKune pigs ‘Mashed Potato’ and ‘Thimble’ are doing very well, eating every piece of food they’re given and doing what pigs do, they will be in their element being fed every day by our lovely visitors when schools out! Our alpacas, donkeys, goats, cows and new baby calves are great to see and the farm park is a great place to relax on those balmy summer days. The farm park will be open every day 11am-3pm from 21st July -2nd September, so we are preparing for six weeks of summer fun here on the farm!

Beetroot, salad leaves, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, raspberries and cherries are in the farm shop this month, with such plentiful produce around the farm and from other local producers, it’s no wonder we love the summer season for food. Being blessed with so many warm sunny days this year and with world cup fever barbecues in full swing, our butchers are working hard preparing the best meats for the grill. Marinated steaks, chicken & chorizo and duck kebabs are just some of the delicious finds from the butchery counter, or if you’re on a camping trip, don’t forget to pack some farmhouse sausages and home-cured bacon, our deli also provides home made quiches, cold meats and a selection of fine cheese, perfect for the happy camper.

Sit back and relax at Granny Smith’s Tea Room with a delightful array of seasonal dishes. Our specials board changes with the seasons and this month we are serving refreshing Caesar salads and our specialty ‘meat platter’, served with our very own grass fed beef. ‘Pimm’s o’clock’ is a good way to relax and un-wind, whether your sharing with friends or simply want a glass to yourself, laced with fresh fruit and mint it’s the perfect summer tipple. Why not book in for an afternoon or high tea and soak up the weather from our terrace. Open seven days a week Foxholes Farm is the place to be this summer.

On behalf of all the team here at Foxholes Farm, we look forward to seeing you this Summer!

    May – Blog

Our farm has finally come to life as spring has finally sprung here at Foxholes Farm. So far the farm is running a few weeks behind than normal, every day we are reminded of jobs and tasks that relate to the early spring season, repairing damaged fields, making our fences stock proof and of course nurturing all our early spring arrivals. Our orphan lambs are now playing freely in the outdoor paddocks and this year we have plenty of baby goats to keep them company. Everything changes so quickly this time of year including our animals, our piglets are bigger, our chicks are fluffier and our baby goats are even more naughty.

Our farm shop team are waiting for the first delivery of British asparagus, although now in season we are not surprised if they arrive (due to weather conditions) a little late. Spring onions, radishes, rocket, watercress and gooseberries start to gradually arrive and if you love lamb we have the perfect cuts for cooking. The BBQ season is here and if you didn’t dust off your BBQ during last month’s heat wave, there is still time to fire it up. Glazed cuts of meat, burgers, steaks and kebabs are just some of the BBQ meats ready for the grill. Or why not stock up the freezer with one of our amazing BBQ meat boxes.

If you’re looking for some half term fun, our farm park will be open every day throughout the half term school holidays from 11am – 3pm and for the little ones we will be hosting our ‘Meet the Farmer’ workshops on the 30th & 31st of May 2018. Spend the morning with our award-winning farmer exploring the delights of a real working farm!

£15.95 per child includes lunch and a free goody bag. 10am – Midday. To book a space, please call our farm shop 01992 552900 (limited spaces available).

Afternoon tea is loved by everyone and what better way to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea than outside on the terrace, whilst taking in the delights of a working farm in the Hertfordshire countryside. Enjoy a homemade scone with lots of fresh clotted cream and a delicious preserve, all washed down with a fresh pot of tea served every day in Granny Smith’s Tea Room.

So as they say ‘Come what may”, make sure you take in the fresh country air and enjoy some family food and fun here at Foxholes Farm!
