In the first few weeks of July we have had two set of piglets born, litters of 7 & 6, smaller than our winter litters but welcome none the less. We shall not be having no more litters now until the autumn, so come along & enjoy them now whilst they are still little. Our egg laying hens have slowed up production whilst they go through their summer moult & our new chickens are yet to begin laying– but will do imminently. The incredibly hot weather we have experienced during July, has prevented the growth of summer grass, therefore requiring us to start feeding them the home grown winter silage. We are dusting down our combine harvester, ready to start our harvest in the first week or so of August, beginning with the oil seed rape, then onto field beans, for animal fodder & wheat for bread & pasta. We then bale the wheat straw for winter bedding for our cows, pigs & chickens. Look out for tweets during harvest, for updates on how things are progressing.
BBQ’s have been, unsurprisingly, incredibly popular throughout July, due to the incredible weather we experienced, lets hope this break in temperatures doesn’t signal our summer is over, as our wonderful butchers, Harry & Mick, have some more wonderful ideas for fantastic feasts throughout the summer months. Please feel free to speak to them for any inspirational ideas, different cuts & cooking methods. So too, in our deli, we have a large selection of home cooked & cured meats, a wonderful selection of British cheese’s & homemade pork pies & pastries for you to make your event extra special.
